How to achieve eyebrow perfection

by Thomas Saverio on 01/29/12

Not to sound cliche but it is said that the eyes are windows to the soul. With that said, you'd better make sure that you're putting forth some pretty impressive peepers! Eyes are often considered the most expressive part of one's face and therefore tend to attract a lot of attention. In fact, according to a recent survey, the eyes are often the first thing that people say they notice on someone of interest.

So how does one achieve attention-grabbing eyes?  Just think of Elizabeth Taylor, who naturally had violet colored eyes and also a "mutation" that created a double row of eye lashes (lucky "mutation"). She was repeatedly noted for their signature eyes. Overall, she had strinkingly stunning features, but if you think about it, her face would have been completely overpowered by her eyes had her eyebrows not been up to par. At the height of her popularity, it was considered very desirable to have very full and shapely eyebrows, a trend well-depicted in many of her photos. In fact, a very interesting trend in the 1950s was for women to fill their eyebrows in with a blue or violet hue to create a little extra pop.

Today, we have a slightly different take on eyebrow maintenance, but the importance of the eyebrows are no less significant. In terms of a daily make-up routine, women often overlook the eyebrows and they tend to become somewhat of an afterthought. But what most women don't realize is that this common mistake is something that can make or break their overall look. Eyebrows are an essential part of framing one's face and also enhance the beauty of ones natural eye shape. You don't want to over-pluck, but you definitely don't want to look like a woolley mammoth either! Finding the right width is key to having successful eyebrows.

Equally as important in the fight to maintain successful eyebrows, is to keep it natural sister! Before you get overzealous with the tweezers and it looks like you took a weed whacker to your face (see pic of Pamela Anderson below), remember the best formula is always to work with your natural eyebrow shape when it comes to any grooming.

The next step is to find your natural arch. (B on the Diagram corresponds to your arch and A and C refer to where your brows should begin and end.) See pic of Angelina Jolie for an example of eyebrow shaping done right.

Step 3: After the correct eyebrow width and shape is achieved, you may need to add a little extra oomph where nature fell a bit short and in areas where your brows may be a bit sparse. This is where eyebrow fillers come to play. Some women prefer to use eyebrow pencils, but oil-based products can tend to leave a very heavy and unnatural finish to one's eyebrows. One suggestion is to start off by following the natural shape of your brow with an eyebrow marker. It's next key to lock that perfect line into place by applying some light powder over it.  A tiny brow applicator brush is the perfect apparatus for defining brows softly and precisely.

That's it, you now have the tools to achieve some show-stopping brows! Of course this sounds foreign and like just plain too much work, feel free to stop by the Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa for an eyebrow wax and/or tinting that is so great, you can forget about having to do any of the above! The choice is yours...

Style by Golden Globes

by Thomas Saverio on 01/16/12

While sitting here watching the Golden Globes, I am taken aback by two things; of course the jaw-dropping dresses but also the less spoken about hair and makeup!  Now hair and makeup is usually looked at as the frosting on the cake (although I'm sure the stylists and makeup artists don't exactly feel that way), but let me tell you, that cake would be pretty dang plain and boring without a sweet and delicious topping.  In general, the 2012 Golden Globes featured some pretty fresh-faced frosting this year!  In my opinion here were some of the highlights amongst the pantheon of beautiful faces:

1. Angelina Jolie:

Now I know what you're thinking, this women could be on a three week bender, wake up, throw on some pj's and still look better than most mere mortals on a good day.  Chalk it up to impeccable bone structure or what have you, but despite having count them 6 kids, Angelina looked extraordinary at the Globes this year.  She did her signature smokey cat eye, which I will try to visually walk you through below courtesy of pinterest below, but she also refreshingly added a pop of red lipstick to match the pop of red that was represented in her dress.  She certainly looked artistically chic, especially with her dapper leading man as arm candy (who looked even more sophisticated with the added prop of a cane I might add).

Runner up for bringing the smokey eye, va va voomness: Miss Emma Stone:

2. Michelle Williams:

Try to think back really hard to yesteryear when Dawson Creek was still ruling television screens all across America.  Now picture one adorable Jen Lindley in all her curly bob glory.  Let's fastforward a few years to a one very sophisticated Michelle Williams, who I wish I could have gone back in time and introduced her perfect pixie cut to her a long time ago.  Seriously can anyone rock a pixie quite like Michelle Williams?  I don't think so!  Her pixie was exquisitely accented with a beautiful headband that perfectly coordinated with her dress. This look was by no means extravagent, and that is exactly the beauty of it, because it placed all the glory on her flawless face - which hardly needs any makeup at all.  On a side note, how adorable was her acceptance speech?  She nominated her win to her daughter with the late Heath Ledger, who she said inspires her every day to do what she does.  Love Love Love.

3. Freida Pinto:

When you're this gorgeous I'm convinced you could slap some watercolors on to your eye lids and still look great, but unfortunately this actress has not gone through with this experiment to date for me to confirm.  Actually Frieda Pinto looked extremely fresh faced with a beautiful metallic tone on the upper eye lid leading to her brow bone, that perfectly highlighted her beautiful skin tone.  In my opinion, her dress was quite cutesy, but her makeup definitely stole the spotlight for me.

Runner up for metallic sheen: Kate Beckinsale

4. Jessica Biel:

Jessica Biel just might be the only woman I'm aware of that could completely cover up her  *cough* better known assets, (she could probably even wear a sheet) and still land on the best look list.  In my opinion, that's pretty much what she did.  While the dress definitely had some interesting elements, I think I would have worn something a little less 19th century if I were her.  Her hair and makeup were quite refreshing though.  She is truly a testament of what the power of mascara plus and enviable set of lashes can do for you (not to mention recent engagement rumors to one Justin Timberlake, you may have heard of him).  Her perfect flowy waves in a dark chestnut brown didn't exactly hurt her either.

5. Charlize Theron:

Bright eyed and bushy tailed would be a pretty applicable description of Charlize Theron's overall look at the 2012 Golden Globes.  Her dress had a rather noticable hip-hugging posterior-esque applique, while her face looked very young and rejuvenated. Not that this striking Christian Dior model could ever look less than fabulous. She definitely let her fantastic set of peepers do all the talking with this look.  She gave her eyes a little extra pop with a very light eyeshadow or eye cream which was extended to the inner corner of her eyes, making her eyes look larger.

Runner up for enviable peepers (which were more lightly enhanced than usual): Miss Evan Rachel Wood

While you may not have the Golden Globes to attend any time soon, it doesn't mean that you won't have your own personal Golden Globes moment or event to attend that is of particular imprtance to you.  In that case, feel free to stop by the Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa in Austin, Tx, and we will make sure to create the perfect Starlet representation you are dying for!

The Top Hair Chameleons of 2011

by Thomas Saverio on 12/30/11

Now that 2011 is almost over, it's time to look back at some of the hair highs from the last year. Some girls had to switch their do's up for movie roles while others are just a little more daring than the average girl (I'm sure the fact that they have live-in stylists at their fingertips doesn't exactly hurt either).  So what are your thoughts, who rocked the hottest hair in 2011, and which styles best suited these fashionistas?

1. Emma Stone

This fabulous and talented young actress has been all over the red carpet this past year, so naturally her hair had to match!  She went from a very dark almost black color, to every shade of red in between, all the way to bleach blonde.  Which of these colors do you think best suited this porcelain actress?

2. Evan Rachel Wood

ERW has always been edgy and adventurous with her style exploits to match the gritty roles she takes.  Last year her hair started off long and wavy and transitioned into a hip and choppy pixie cut.  She also played around with the color, ranging from black, to burgundy, to red, to orange, to blonde!  Which style do you think looks best on Evan?

3. Rihanna

Rihanna has never been one to shy away from taking risks when it comes to her fashion choices, so naturally her hair reflects that about her personality.  Riri loves to experiment with cuts and colors that play up and draw attention to her flawless face, so her stylings are typically different variations of a pixie look.  Every now and then she will throw in a longer style though.  Her hair has been a very electric tone of red this past year as well as black and a black and golden mix.  Which style do you think best suits Rihanna?

4. Rachel McAdams

Rachel's hair has seen a lot of change throughout the years to reflect the different dynamic roles she's played.  Because of Rachel's different looks, she has been able to pull off mature, glamourous, as well as young and hip roles.  Which way do you prefer to see Rachel McAdams?

5. Katy Perry

I wouldn't be surprised if Katy Perry actually looks at the color wheel and hair samples as the same thing.  She is definitely one to not think twice about changing her hair colors; her hair therefore literally becomes the flavor of the week.  So which of her rainbow of choices do you think looked best on her in 2011?

If you are ever timid about changing your hairstyle, keep in mind that these ladies literally went through all of these complete hair transformations within 1 year!  So which of these looks do you think best suited these 5 fabulous hair chameleons?

If any of these styles inspired you, then feel free to either call or schedule an appointment at the Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa, and one of our very capable stylists would be more than happy to make your Hollywood hairspiration come to life!

My Day at the Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa

by Thomas Saverio on 12/17/11

When you blog about a salon and spa that has as vast an array of beautifying options as does the Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa, it can be difficult to decide exactly which salon services you would like to have done yourself.  Completely perplexed, I attended the Thomas Saverio's lovely Christmas party, and all of my quandries were set to ease by a very gracious and experienced nail specialist by the name of Brenda Lopez.  That very night we scheduled my (i'm ashamed to say) very first appointment at the salon.  It was decided that I would have a new nail treatment that is performed at exclusive salons throughout the city, of course including the Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa.  Not fully knowing what I was scheduling but 100% trusting the TS staff, I went ahead and scheduled what is called an OPI gel nail treatment.

A few days later, I came in with my embarrassingly dilapidated fingernails hoping for nothing short of a miracle, and that is exactly what I got!  I was led into the nail wing (as I like to call it), which is unique in that it is separated from the hair portion of the salon with a very crisp and serene feel, further putting you at ease by not subjecting your funky hands and feet to everyone else in the salon.  I was then given a brief rundown of exactly what was about to occur, and the benefits quickly became very clear.  Basically, somehow amazing new technology has been incorporated into the science of fancying your fingernails to where this new OPI polish is essentially able to emulate the strength and durability of an artificial nail while looking natural at the same time.  Twice in my life I've had artificial nails, while both times I was happy with how they looked for about two weeks, I quickly realized all the downsides after that two week bliss period turned into more of a nightmare.  See I have incredibly thin nails, and when it's time to remove the fake nails, I basically know that I will have little to nothing left underneath.  It then takes months for my nails to grow out and strengthen once again, of course ripping like paper all the way.  This is obviously very damaging for your natural nails and there is always the scary potential for them to never grow back the same in the future.  NO THANKS.

Brenda also explained that it has been her experience that women are largely steering away from artificial nails and preferring to go more towards a natural look and feel.  Being that I constantly follow pop culture ( to gather the latest fresh material for your viewing pleasure) I have likewise noticed this trend.

After receiving a thorough understanding of this new treatment, I was primed and practically squirming in my chair to pick what would be my nail color.  Being the vampire that I am, I of course went with a very chic hue somewhere in between black and brown, but there are several other colors to choose from if that isn't exactly your thing.  The polish session was basically like any other; Brenda started with a base coat to hold the color, she then applied two coatings of the nail polish, and finished it all of with a special sealant.  In between each coat I stuck my hands into a space ship-like dryer that glowed bright blue from the presence of laser lights and made my hands feel like they were having a relaxing day at the beach.

This is very close to the color that I got but on a much better hand model:A simlilar nail color on a better hand model

Almost immediately following the last coat, Brenda shockingly started buffing my nails with a rough material, intentionally trying to test whether or not they would ruin.  Normally of course your nails would be toast, but to my amazement, these nails didn't budge.  Still reeling with the shock from this suprising feat, I was simultaneously also secretly filled with elation knowing that now I would be able to avoid having to ask someone to dig through my black hole of a purse in order to retrieve my car keys for fear of ruining my nails.  I left the salon completely pleased with the how amazing my nails looked and how seemingly durable they were.  This satisfaction has not waned since the; I have now had my nails for over a week, not having been careful with my nails whatsoever, and they are still in mint condition!  I have to tell you that I am 100% sold on this new nail treatment and this will be my go-to salon service and/or excuse to go to the Salon and chat it up with Brenda from here on out.

The Thomas Saverio Salon & Spa will be happy to liberate your nails from the confines of artificial entrapments!  Either pick up the phone or stop by the salon today to book your personal appointment or become someone's best friend by gifting them this revolutionary new OPI Gel nail treatment. For different color options, you can also ask about having the gel nail treatment in Shellac.

Tis The Season: Unique Holiday Gift Ideas Sure to Impress

by Thomas Saverio on 12/03/11

Please someone tell me who did it? Tell me, who is the crazy holiday fanatic, who blinked their eye and caused Christmas to be here already???

Not to sound like a complete Scrooge but as great as Christmas is, there really is a whole lot of work involved in preparation for one single day. In order to get everything done, people don't even get to wait until December to get started anymore. If your family does things anything like mine, Thanksgiving isn't actually a day of sloth and rest (as it should be). NO, Thanksgiving is actually code for "Official Elf Work Day" as my mom likes to put it. After eating 10 helpings of stuffing, 3 slices of pumpkin pie, not to mention 4 helpings of the tryptophan-injected turkey, I am expected to then put up a Christmas tree complete with lights, ornaments, and all the bells and whistles. Does it stop there? Of course not! Depending on how dead-set you are on keeping up with the Jones's, your decorating could include outside lights, cut out Santa Claus's or if you are lucky enough to be at my parent's house, putting together a complete, life-size manger (hay included).

This of course brings us to the gifts. I hope you've been saving up all year and listening to all the hints that your significant other has been not-so-casually dropping. The goal is to find something that each individual will like (even if you hardly know their favorite color), something they don't already have, while being unique at the same time, all without copping out and just going with a VISA Gift Card. I would say that this is a painstaking operation (and normally it is), but luckily you have a fairy Godmother this Christmas who has already done the research for you. You're Welcome. :)

Gift Ideas Sure to Impress:

Pampering Packages: Husbands/Significant Others take note here - pampering packages are the perfect gifts to give to that someone special for several reasons.  First of all, nothing shows you care more than giving a gift that allows your lady to relax and feel great - showing that you appreciate her hard work and affection.  Also, women love to be pampered but can't always justify such services on a regular basis.  This allows for them to feel great, guilt-free!

How to Pull off that "Angelic" Look: Victoria Secret's Angel that is

by Thomas Saverio on 11/13/11

After the most devilishly delightful holiday of the year it is only fitting that something equally angelic occurs to restore balance and order in the world once again.  The planets were abruptly realigned once the Victoria's Secret models took to the runway for their 2011 fashion show last week, which will air later this month.  This fashion show is definitely one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year for a variety of *cough* reasons.  Okay, let's be real here, every woman watches the show wanting to be one of the models, and every guy wants to be with one of them.  It is just an opportunity for these fabulously adorned angels to parade their perfection everyone's faces (the little green monster on my shoulder just forced me to write that) and of course Victoria's Secret is  happy to do it!

Now, we might not be able to provide you body tips on how to look like an angel from neck down, other than attempting to stretch your body to grow about six inches (this is actually a lot harder than it sounds).  According to Victoria's Secret model, Adriana Lima, who recently revealed to MSN that her intense preparation  methods include drinking a gallon of water a day as well as dieting and training for months on end.  She also said that, "nine days before the show, she stops eating solid foods and drinks only protein shakes, which include powdered egg."  Now I'll definitely admit that this is a display of some serious dedication from this well-deserved bestower of wings.  Unless you are being paid the big bucks like Adriana to do your thing though, I wouldn't necessarily suggest following her methods (unless you are just THAT dedicated to your own personal bedroom mirror runway shows). There are however still some ways to achieve an angel-worthy look from the neck up.

Tips for pulling off the distinctive Victoria's Secret "Look":

1. Long, Layered Locks with A Bit More Bounce: Now I know what some of you might be thinking: do Victoria's Secret models actually have hair?  To that I say shame on you first of all, and second yes they have hair!  Not only do they just have hair, they have some of the most mesmerizingly bouncy waves on this side of the Atlantic Ocean!  If you think about it, if their hair wasn't perfect at all times, their hair might actually gain some attention - but not in a good way.  In order to achieve these flawless soft waves, here are a few tricks of the trade:

  • Start with the right product: Considering you are going to be using heat on your hair, it is always good to use a heat protectorant of some sort. we suggest: Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide Smoother.  Next, you need to apply volumizer to your hair, especially focusing on the roots: Our favorite is Unite Boosta Spray .
  • Now that your hair is prepped, it's time to get to work.  It's easiest if you separate your hair into more manageable sections and focus on one section at a time. You are going to want to use a large 1 1/2" to 2" curling iron, making sure that the barrel of the iron is at a vertical angle to the head and that you curl the hair away from your face. Start from the root, positioning the iron at a safe distance from your head, and twirl the hair around the iron. Leave the ends out of the iron for a natural, modern look.
  • Once you have curled each section, gently run your fingertips through the curls so that they are not so taught, but rather more wavy and a little messier.
  • Finally you are going to finish with a good hairspray.  We suggest: Unite Max Control Hairspray.

2. Pick a Good Bronzer and bathe in it: It makes perfect sense that if you're going to be strutting your stuff on a runway with every eye on you, you probably are going to want your skin to be up to par.   The right bronzer and perhaps a little glitter is the perfect way to achieve this godess-esque look without too much painstaking work.  We suggest trying the right shade of Original Glo Base from the EveryDay Minerals line for that added luster.

3. Rock a Dramatic Eye with a Natural Lip: Victoria Secret's stylists definitely know that showcasing their models' eyes and leaving the lips nude, creates that perfect sultry, come-hither look.  Makeup can be a beast of its own if you don't have the proper tools/ a 24/7 expert makeup artist on hand, and is also pretty difficult to explain properly in a blog format. Worry not though! For a look that I feel replicates that fun and flirty feel of a Victoria's Secrets model, here is a link to Elle Fowler's vlog.  She is basically a makeup aficianado who offers up easy-to-do makeup tutorials for the non-expert.  In this look she uses a variety of MAC shadows and products. If these products aren't available you can always substitute similar colors from another line.  Here at the salon we like to use Everyday Minerals, which have a nice variety of eyeshadow pigments to choose from, but you can of course use what is at your immediate disposal.

So that pretty much wraps it up on how to the Victoria's Secret Angel look (from the neck up at least).  Of course if you find any of these tips to be challenging in any way or would rather be pampered and have someone do it for you, definitely feel free to call or stop by the Thomas Saverio Salon, and our team of highly esteemed staff will be glad to assist you in your quest of becoming a glam goddess.

Finding The Perfect Halloween Hairstyle

by Thomas Saverio on 10/25/11

The countdown is on for the most ghoulish yet still festive day of the year; I'm talking about Halloween of course.  I'm sure many of you have been meticulously planning the intricacies of your perfect costume for weeks now, but for those of us last minute, just-gonna-throw-something-together kind of gals, this can be a pretty stressful time.  An interesting concept, yet not often considered, is that you can actually start planning your perfect costume solely based off of a fabulous hairstyle.  Even if you're an "overachiever" and you think that you have everything 100% ready to go  (I'm guessing you might even have your head-to-toe regalia hanging in a designated spot that you catch yourself fighting the temptation to keep trying on), but the question to be asked is: is your hair truly up to par with the rest of your outfit?

The perfect halloween hairstyle can actually be the make it or break it accessory from taking a mere person in a costume to the next level of transforming them into that character.  How often have you seen some one with a great costume that obviously did not put as much attention into their hair?  It is a sad sight to behold indeed.  Luckily, there are some great DIY hairstyles that can either spark some inspiration for halloween or allow you to pull off the most amazing rendition that anyone has ever seen.

Here is How To Pull Off Victory Rolls - A Glamorous Rockabilly Pin-up Hairstyle courtesy of hubpage.com's kittythedreamer:

Necessary Rockabilly hairstyling tools for Rockabilly Pinup Victory Rolls: styling comb, hot rollers & clips, brush, bobby pins, hairspray.

1. First you'll want to set your entire head of hair in the hot rollers and let it cool. If your hair is particularly thin, you can always tease it or brush it back to add some thickness/texture to your hair. Remember to particularly tease the sections of the sides of your head that you plan to make into your victory rolls...hold them up and tease them in the direction of the roll.

2. Pick up your comb and comb out the hair on both sides of your head, which will be used to make two Victory Rolls on the top of your head. Then hairspray to keep it together.

3. Because of the curl from the hot rollers, your sections of hair that you want to roll should have a natural curl to the ends. Now roll each section of hairsprayed hair on each side of your head to the top. Keep in mind that victory rolls are usually rolled up and in.

4. Once you have one roll and the hair looks smooth and the curl is to your liking (as far as size and positioning), pin the insides down to the crown of your head to keep the victory roll in tact. Use a wide-toothed comb to tame any flyaways and to smooth the roll in the proper direction.

5. Experiment with different sizes of rolls, different positions of victory rolls and different weights. And don't forget to go to town with the hairspray!

You can also add a flower to the side of your head, directly underneath one of your victory rolls. Tie the rest of your hair back into a low ponytail or let it hang loose in pretty curly tendrils for a sexier night-time look!

Here are some other hairstyles that might serve as some inspiration:

Bride of Frankenstein

Zombie Girl

Modern Vampire

Classic Vampire

Romantic Vampire

Goddess

Old Hollywood Pinup - Christina Aguilera

"The Snooki Poof"

SHORT Hair for a BIG Impact

by Thomas Saverio on 10/16/11

When it comes to making a drastic hair change, it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming but it's good to keep in mind that a great pair of cutting shears are nothing to be afraid of, they can actually be your best friend.

One way to make a big change with a dramatic impact for the change in seasons is by simply switching up your do.  Who needs a complete clothing makeover, when everyone is going to be staring at your stylish hair and beautiful face?  If you have reservations on the pre-programmed idea that cold weather should be coming at some point (first of all you might want to re-train your brain at least if you are a fellow Texan), then it's great to realized that it becomes a perfect venue to showcase a fabulous scarf selection.

So, here is the rundown on what great benefits come of simply cropping your do.

First of all, it completely opens up your face and focuses all the attention there.  This works perfectly for people with a specific strong feature such as full and/or distinct eyes, cute/elvish ears, or a great jawline/cheekbone combination, or conversely it works well for people who have an overall cohesive look of smaller facial features that may not have one thing that stands out above the others.

Keep in mind that this will accentuate the jaw/neckline.  Therefore this generally works best on people with a non-roundish face, a nice neckline and smaller ears.

Secondly, it is INCREDIBLY sleek and stylish and it automatically creates an air of confidence to outsiders and in turn an added layer of sex appeal.

Last but not least, how fun and easy it is to style such a look?  Hair maintainence time is drastically reduced and you can easily switch up the overall look of your do with just a tiny bit of hair gel.

Case in point, check out some amazing demonstrations of what a pixie cut or a short cut that still maintains a little bit of length (in case you are too wary of doing away with all of your hair at once) can really do for a person :

HOT nail trends to usher in the colder weather of Fall 2011!

by Thomas Saverio on 10/03/11

Aw, the dawn of a new season, welcome endless fashion possibilities; time to get out with the old and in with the new.  Rather than looking at the coming of fall with the glass half full outlook as if it is the end to bright colors and cheeriness and instead the influx of the cold plus a complete overhaul of your wardrobe  (unless of course you are an unfortunate year-round vampire inhabiting Texas, in which case you are ecstatic for the change *cough*), this Fall is actually all about the subtleties, making it possible to make a big impact with minimal effort.

I am of course referring to nail adornments or nail art, so appropriately named based upon the schmorgesborg of luxurious colors available "at your fingertips" this fall and the BIG, dramatic tie in to overall looks that come in such small packages.  Yes, we may be starting to cover up every square inch of exposed flesh with jackets, pants, boots, and scarves, but there is still one way to send a subtle yet impactful message of "put togetherness" and sex appeal created by merely peeking your perfect pointers from the recesses of your sleeves.

Here are some of the highlights in the nail polish world to look forward to this season:

New York Fashion Week Hair in Minutes: How to Achieve the Perfect Slicked back Ponytail

by Thomas Saverio on 09/16/11

Another fabulous year of New York Fashion Week is wrapping up, and we saw some amazing looks on the runway this year.  Often people focus on primarily the clothing that they see but what they fail to recognize is that each collection is meant to be a cohesive look.  The background, music, stage setup, clothing, shoes, accessories all must be perfect, but what really ties the entire collection together is the hair and makeup.

There were so many amazing looks this year, but one in particular really stood out.  The Donna Karan show featured some very sleek and sophisticated clothing, so it was only fitting that she chose a hairstyle that perfectly fit her clothing, could work with every model- with the degree of variety it presented creating additional interest, while not taking away from the clothing.

She chose to go with an extremely slicked back ponytail with a chocolatey brown lip shade and perfectly structured eyebrows.  This in turn emphasized structure because the jaw line and facial features were really accentuated, which transtlated to the crisp, neatness seen throughout her clothing line.

Other Hollywood startlets and fashionistas have been seen out and about rockin' the same slicked back look lately, and I must say they definitely look good doing it:

Here are some simple instructions to achieve the most enviable, slick-backed ponytail there is in only a matter of minutes:

  1. Dampen your hair and spray your whole head liberally with any good gel hair product. You may prefer to use a styling spray or gel. You can also create this ponytail with wet hair, letting it air dry after your hair is in the ponytail.  We Suggest: Trying Unite LIQUA Versa-Gel for an extra sleek look and a very strong hold.
  2. Use a smooth wide-toothed comb or smooth pick to smooth and untangle the hair.
  3. Secure your hair in a firm, but not overly tight, ponytail in a "hair friendly" elastic band such as a Blax, Bungee or similar.
Note: It is best not to pull the hair too tightly into the ponytail. If the ponytail is too tight you may experience a slight headache. Long term wearing of tight ponytails can actually encourage hair loss in some circumstances.
  4. Spray with a strong hair spray. If you have bangs, you can slick them back, to the side or spiked up.

How to Achieve Longer & Healthier Hair

by Thomas Saverio on 08/31/11

Considering it's 1,000 degrees outside (at least here in Texas), it might not feel like fall is approaching anytime soon but believe it or not, it is just right around the corner.  Somehow with the first impression of fall also comes an almost instantaneous yearning for and a reminder that women once again love their "once-cursed" long, flowy locks.  Gone are those summertime, neck grazing hair styles, enter long and sleek hair that can be tucked into a fantastic fitted blazer (which is going to be all the rave this fall).  Luckily with this heat you have a little bit to jumpstart this elongating process, but you  may  want to think about some simple steps to make your hair grow baby, grow!

Here are some tips on what to do and what not to do to achieve that long Rapunzel-like mane (hopefully minus all of the forest creatures and garnishes nestling within it).

Let's start off with what NOT TO DO:

1. Brush While Wet: Here is something that I'm sure we are all a little guilty of from time to time, but brushing your hair while it is still moist actually creates breakage, thus further deterring you from your multiplying hair act.
2. Wait too long between washings: Now I know we've all heard that washing your hair too often dries out the hair, leaving it straw-like and damaged, but it is also equally true that leaving your hair dirty for too long will do the same thing.  Dirty hair can cause the scalp's natural oil to be blocked and unable to lubricate the hair shaft, thus creating dry and brittle hair.  It is suggested that you wash your hair around 3 to 4 times per week for optimal sheen and luster.
3. Wear TIGHT ponytails, braids or buns for extended periods of time: It is true that your hair can actually fall out due to scalp tension from this repeated abuse and torture (you  hair masochist you).  The best suggestion is to loosen up those up-dos.  Keep it wild and sultry.
4. Stress: Severe stress can actually shut down your hair production, causing temporary hair loss.  Yikes!  We suggest a great bottle of wine and a bubble bath in this case!
5. Smoke: This isn't exactly related to hair length, but I think it is definitely worthwhile to adhere to.  Smoking actually makes your hair 4 times more likely to grey, plus you may have heard that smoking also comes with a few other adhere side effects.

What TO DO to reach new hair heights:

1. Massage your scalp/deep condition: Regular scalp massages promotes proper circulation which is highly beneficial in stimulating hair growth (and they feel amazing to boot). We suggest doing this with a great product such as: Furterer Karite Intense Nourishing conditioning cream.  This rich deep conditioning mask nourishes and repairs very dry, damaged hair.  In-depth restructuring reveals healthier, softer and more manageable hair.  Simply work it into your scalp after washing and leave it in for 10 to 20 minutes for maximum results.
2. Trim split ends: I know we've all heard that regular hair trims can cause your hair to grow more rapidly, but there has actually never been a scientific causal relation with these two things.  What is 100% true is that going too long in between trims will cause you to fall far behind in the split end race.  Uncut split ends can actually travel up the hair shaft towards the root.  Over time, this untended hair can split all the way up; your splits can even split.  So hair stylists aren't just blowing hot steam when they say that you should regularly have a trim around every 6-8 weeks, because while trims may not actually create growth, the lack there of can definitely stunt any further growth.

3. Avoid overuse of blow dryers/straightening irons: No surprise here, when you consistently expose anything to 400+ degree extremes, there might be some adverse effects.  Excessive heat can actually damage the cuticle of the hair-the hard outer protective coating on each strand-creating an endless cycle of frizzy and damaged hair requiring more and more attention.
We suggest:skipping a few of these abuse sessions and try a different route, such as scrunching your hair with Unite Scruncha Gel to still achieve a rich, frizz-free look.
If your addiction to your hair straightener goes way past a Healthy hobby and you can't bear the thought of less-than-stick-straight hair for one day, then at least apply a good heat protective spray to coat your strands before you do any heating.  (Warning: Heat protective spray does NOT prevent 100% of damages).
4. Sleep on silk pillows: Sounds lavish and extravagant (and AWESOME) but Elliot Bassila, Creative Director at the Nicky Clarke Salon recommends switching to a silk pillowcase such as one from silkperfect.com in order to banish frizz.  According to Elliot, "sleeping on silk can help to prevent split ends while locking in the hair's natural oils to leave your mane looking luscious."  So girls, simply explain to your sig other that sleeping in silk is vital to your hair health, and I'm sure it will be an easy sell.
5.  Maintain a healthy diet: A nutritious diet is vital in overall health so not surprisingly, it is also just as important in achieving healthy, rapidly growing hair.  Foods rich in vitamin B, proteins and iron are highly recommended .

How to Acheive this Summer's Hollywood Starlet Hair

by Thomas Saverio on 08/22/11

As we all know, the weather outside is breaking all time high temps in an apparent attempt to compete with Hades for the title of world's hottest realm.  This "wrath"of Mother Nature has not surprisingly inspired people to stay indoors.  Luckily, there has been a schmorgesborg of entertaining movies to check out this summer that have made dealing with the absence of outdoors a lot more bearable.

There are a few silver screened leading ladies that have made a big impact over these last couple of sweltering months, starring in multiple roles back to back.  For acting purposes it is of course essential to see these actresses in varying roles with different overall looks to represent range but in some cases, this "look transformation necessity" doubles as a means for us to feel a little bit better when we realize that these ethereal creatures are in fact, human.

Check out some of the hair metamorphoses that these Hollywood starlets showcased in their respective roles throughout the summer:

#1  Emma Stone in The Help & Crazy, Stupid Love-

If you have read The Help (you should by the way, it is amazing) then you know that "Skeeter", Emma Stone's character, is supposed to have some pretty untamed & frizzy curls.  Luckily, the movie's stylists weren't THAT mean and allowed for Emma to have a little more control in her sea of ringlets.  Check out the extreme difference between Emma's Curly Sue look and her bombshell shiny wave in Crazy, Stupid Love.

To achieve this look we suggest applying a little Unite: Laser Straight-Relaxing Fluid to your hair. It smooths and tames curly, wavy or frizzy hair and acts as a thermal protectant to enhance weightless shine.

#2 Olivia Wilde in Cowboys & Aliens & The Change-Up-

In Cowboys & Aliens, Olivia Wilde plays a head-strong cowgirl bound and determined to save the world from aliens. Given that, we'll try to let it slide that her hair was somewhat of an afterthought throughout her intense adventure. Check out how her hair goes from wild (no pun intended) and unkempt to ultra sexy in The Change-Up.

To achieve a look like this that will hold all day (even while fighting ruthless aliens) we suggest using: Unite: Max Control-Strong Hold Spray because it is a workable hairspray that has an ultra strong hold that you can still brush through.

#3 Zooey Deschanel in Our Idiot Brother & Your Highness-

In the upcoming Our Idiot Brother, Zooey Deschanel is a bit of a hipster whereas in Your Highness, she plays Belladonna, a young maiden bride. See if you can tell the difference between looks:

To achieve this transformation we suggest the following: apply some United: "Boing"-Curling Cream which works perfectly for enhancing ringlets, bouncy, tight, loose, big and small curls while keeping hair soft and bouncy while also holding the curls in place.

#4 Jennifer Lawrence in The Beaver & X-Men: First Class-

In The Beaver, Jennifer Lawrence plays a cheerleader-valedictorian trying to get a speech together in time for graduation; no wonder the girl didn't have time to get her hair in order! Check out the difference between her "kinda-sorta coiff" and her fabulous large ringlets as Mystique in X-Men: First Class.

To achieve this look we suggest washing your hair with Unite: Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner because it creates soft, flexible volume and enhances natural luster and shine without sacrificing your hair's natural moisture.

#5 Jennifer Aniston in Just Go With It & Horrible Bosses-

We know, Just Go With It came out a little bit earlier this year, but we're going to let it slide due to Jen Aniston's multiple years of All-Star Hair Hall of Fame status. In a rare instance, we get to see Jennifer Aniston's character, Katherine, rock some pretty "blah librarian" hairstyles before her character makes her own transformation in Just Go With It. Compared to Jennifer Anistom's role as a "very passionate and (cough) carnal" dentist in Horrible Bosses, I guess it's understandable that her hair as well as everything about her, was slightly more on the "tame" side.

To achieve Jen's sleek look we suggest using Keratin Smoothing complex, because it is specially formulated to contain natural keratin protein, which rebuilds, restores, and rejuvenates all types of hair.

If achieving any of these "looks" sounds overly complicated or if you would like to find out some more information about our awesome hair products, feel free to give us a call at 512-323-6014. Happy Styling!
